Ancelotti responds to Courtois' stinging comments after the defeat against Leipzig: "Everyone has their opinion"

Carlo Ancelotti said he was "not upset" by Real Madrid's shock 3-2 defeat to Leipzig in the Champions League.

It is the first loss for Real Madrid this season, as it did not lose in the Spanish League and the Champions League before Tuesday evening.

However, goals by Jusko Gvardiol, Christopher Nkunko, and Timo Werner saw RB Leipzig win at Red Bull Arena and boost their chances of finishing top of Group F - with Real just one point clear of the lead.

Ancelotti said after the match: "We conceded goals in both halves and the match went into the dynamic they wanted, they were very good on the counter-attack."

He added: “The key was these two set-piece goals. I am not upset, it is a defeat, and it annoys us, but it is a defeat that does not hurt us much.

“We have another chance [to secure the lead]. I can't criticize a team that has done very well so far."

Real Madrid conceded three goals in a group match for the first time in two years, when they lost 3-2 to Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Champions League holders meet Celtic at home next week in their last game of the group, where a victory would lead to the top of the group, which is why Ancelotti is not concerned.

He continued, “Sometimes, you learn more from losing than you learn from ten wins in a row. It could happen, we played in a way we didn't want to. It was better to play a low block and the match went in the opposite direction.”

He continued, “I didn't see a lack of attitude or intensity. The defeat was to come sooner or later. It hurts because defeats always hurt, but some are less than others.”

The Italian coach was asked about his opinion on the statements of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, in which he accused the players of complacency and blamed the defenders for the loss because they lost a lot of tackles, which caused the goals that entered his goal.

Courtois' statements

“What happens sometimes is that we go into matches while asleep, and we paid for that in today’s match, and the coach warned us several times about this, and we still repeat it.”

The Belgian added: “I was afraid of that because as a goalkeeper, I have to notice, we lost a lot of tackles, and this resulted in two goals in our net, there are many players on the bench if you cannot provide more.”

And Courtois ended, saying: “We could have achieved a win or at least a draw, but we conceded a third goal from a counter-attack.

Ancelotti responded: "Everyone has their own opinion."
